About NAE

Who is NAE Vegan Shoes?

NAE is a Portuguese footwear brand, founded in Lisbon in 2008. We design distinctive, plant-based shoes — made to last, made in Portugal, and 100% vegan.

What does "NAE" mean?

NAE stands for No Animal Exploitation — the conviction the brand was built on. Every pair is made entirely without animal materials, and always has been.

Where are NAE shoes made?

Our shoes are made in four factories in the north of Portugal and two in Spain — long-standing partners we work with closely. Our offices, warehouse and store are in Lisbon.

Are NAE shoes really 100% vegan?

Yes. Every NAE shoe and accessory is 100% vegan — no leather, no animal-derived materials, no animal glues. NAE is PETA-Approved Vegan.

Is NAE cruelty-free and certified?

Yes — NAE is PETA-Approved Vegan, and our ethics and sustainability are independently rated by Good On You. Wherever possible, we also work with certified materials — including OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — for added assurance on safety, recycled content and organic origin.

Does NAE use leather?

No — never. NAE has been completely leather-free and animal-free since 2008. It comes down to a simple conviction: we don't think a well-made shoe should cost an animal its life — or carry the environmental footprint that leather production does. In its place, we use vegan materials such as cork, AppleSkin and recycled microfiber.

What materials does NAE use?

Plant-based and recycled vegan materials: cork, AppleSkin (made from apple waste), Piñatex (pineapple fibre), recycled PET, organic cotton and a certified vegan microfiber (OEKO-TEX Standard 100). Never animal.

Are NAE shoes sustainable?

Sustainability is built into how we make them — plant-based and recycled materials, produced in Portugal, and designed to last rather than be replaced. NAE is independently rated by Good On You.

Are NAE shoes good quality and durable?

Yes. NAE shoes are made in Portugal, a country known for its footwear craftsmanship, and designed to be worn for years — not just a season.

What makes NAE different?

NAE is, first, a design-led footwear brand: distinctive shoes, made in Portugal, built to last. That they're also plant-based and 100% vegan is the proof that style and a clear conscience can live in the same pair.

Where can I buy NAE shoes?

You can shop NAE online at nae-vegan.com, with worldwide shipping, and in person at our store in Chiado, Lisbon. A selection of our shoes is also available through partner retailers — get in touch and we'll point you to a stockist near you.

About the Product

How do I find my ideal size while purchasing online?

Check out the Size Guide available on each product page. The best way to find your perfect fit is by measuring the sole of your barefoot in cm/in from the toe to the heel, in a straight line. Then, you just need to find the corresponding size. Here’s another important tip: if you’re a half size, we recommend you purchase the larger size. Your feet will have a little extra space, which is great especially if you wear socks with the shoes or for those days when your feet are a bit more swollen than usual.

My size is sold out. What should I do next?

Please contact us to confirm if the model will be restocked – and when. In the meantime, sign up on our website and activate the stock alert notification on the product page. Just click on the sold-out size and select the "I want to be notified quickly" button. You will then be notified via email when/if this model is back in stock. There might also be returns of the shoes in your size from other customers.

What are NAE's vegan materials?

NAE shoes are made from a range of plant-based and recycled vegan materials — never anything from an animal. The mix depends on the shoe, but the core materials are:

  • Cork — harvested from the bark of cork oaks without felling the tree; light, water-resistant and naturally renewable.
  • AppleSkin — a leather alternative made partly from apple waste from the juicing industry.
  • Piñatex — a textile made from pineapple-leaf fibre, a by-product of the fruit harvest.
  • Recycled PET — fabric and linings made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • Organic cotton — used in laces, linings and details.
  • Certified vegan microfiber — durable and OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified, used where a style needs extra strength and structure.

Are NAE's vegan materials fully sustainable?

As a rule, the more natural the material, the lower its footprint — cork and organic cotton sit right at that end. But a shoe also has to last: one that falls apart in a season is the least sustainable choice of all, whatever it's made of.

So the material depends on the shoe. Where a style needs extra strength, structure or water resistance, we use harder-wearing materials such as our certified vegan microfiber — even though its footprint is higher than cork's. Where a softer, more natural material does the job, we use that instead.

Not every material suits every type of shoe. Matching the right vegan material to the right style is how we keep NAE both responsible and built to last.

What is the OEKO-TEX certification?

The Standard 100 certificate issued by OEKO-TEX® ensures the total absence of harmful chemicals and certifies that a particular product is not hazardous to the environment or the consumer’s health. The tests are conducted by OEKO-TEX® independent partner institutes, based on an extensive catalogue of criteria and requirements.

What is the GRS (Global Recycled Standard)?

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international certification for products made with recycled materials. It independently verifies how much recycled content a product contains and tracks it through the supply chain, while also setting environmental and social requirements for how the material is processed. We use GRS-certified materials, such as recycled PET, so the recycled content is verified rather than simply claimed.

What is the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading certification for textiles made from organic fibres, such as organic cotton. It confirms that the fibre is grown organically and that strict environmental and social standards are met at every stage of processing, from harvest to finished material. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton, so its organic origin is independently verified.

Where does NAE's cork come from?

Our cork comes from Portugal — the world's largest cork producer, where cork oaks have been cultivated for generations. It's one of the most sustainable materials we work with: harvested by hand from the bark of the cork oak, which is carefully stripped without cutting down or harming the tree. The bark grows back, and the same tree can be harvested roughly every nine years for more than a century. It's also the material that gives many NAE styles their distinctive, natural texture.
