All About Our Organic Cotton

Here at NAE, we pride ourselves on having a diverse range of sustainable materials to work with. Everything we use in our vegan shoes has to be both durable and eco-friendly, so our criteria for selection is very discerning. Today, we're going to shine a light on our organic cotton material, something which we use for many of our soft material shoes and heels, as well as for many of our laces and liners.
What is Organic Cotton?
Cotton is a fluffy fibre that grows from a plant, and is a global crop used for a significant portion of the world's fabric consumption. While it's bio-degradable, vegan, and plant based, it's too often not organic. In this context, organic just means that a crop was grown without the use of harsh chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and other farming chemicals, and excludes genetically modified seeds. Organic cotton is grown free from all intensive farming methods, allowing soil to rest, so at to not deplete the land of nutrients. Using traditional seeds also allows for a better variety of colours without dying. Cotton has been selectively bred to be pure white in almost all cases, however once upon a time, there were common varieties that grew in either a tan beige, or bluish green. Our organic cotton is grown from heirloom seeds, with colours once thought lost, so as to create a healthier and more sustainable finished product.
Why do we Use Organic Cotton?
We use organic cotton because we support sustainable farming. Of course, eating and wearing plant based is an incredible thing to do, but your positive contribution can sometimes be undermined by intensive farming practices. Choosing organic cotton means that the cotton economy can remain sustainable, and the earth can be re-sown according to crop rotation year after year, without needing to log forests for more field space. Not only is it the most ethical, sustainable method of making cotton, it feels better too! The quality is always higher when the cotton is grown with care, and without all of the intensive bleaching and pesticiding and other processing. The cotton is softer, less damaged ,and overall of a higher quality during it's use lifespan. It is hypo-allergenic, and feels softer against even sensitive skin. Furthermore, once it's reached the end of it's lifespan, the resultant fabric can bio-degrade more naturally, without chemical treatments leeching into otherwise good earth. From seed to soil, organic cotton is better for the planet, better for your skin, and a better option for creating fine vegan shoes.
What do we Make from Organic Cotton?
We create a wide range of vegan shoes from organic cotton, and include it as a component in many more models, such as the laces or lining. Today, we're going to look at one specific shoe from our new Blooming collection that best shows off the versatility and quality of our Organic cotton.
Violet
Violet is a beige coloured women's heel, with an upper constructed from premium organic cotton. Forgoing the traditional strap or clasp, this shoe instead has cotton fabric that you tie into a knot to hold it to your leg, giving a more natural, flowy feeling. These stylish, summery heels are soft on the foot, and bear a comfortable arch to support your sole. Due to the material and open design, the shoe is breathable, and the hypoallergenic nature of organic cotton makes it ideal for even the most sensitive of skin. It's perfect for a summer garden party or casual soirée. Be sure to check out the full range of organic cotton shoes on our website.
