Are Vegan Boots as Warm as Leather Boots?

Yes — and the reason is simpler than you'd think: warmth was never really a property of leather in the first place. What keeps a boot warm is the air trapped inside it, the lining against your foot, how well the boot handles moisture, and how it fits. None of those things requires an animal.
It's a fair question to ask, though, because the assumption runs deep. Here's what actually determines whether your feet are warm in January.
Where warmth actually comes from
Insulation doesn't generate heat. It traps air — and still air is a very poor conductor of heat, which is precisely what makes it useful. The finer and denser the fibres in a lining or insulating layer, the more air pockets they hold, and the harder it is for the warmth your body produces to escape. That's the whole mechanism, in a boot or a duvet.
The upper — the outer material, leather or otherwise — plays a different role. Its job is to be a shell: to block the wind that would otherwise strip warm air out of the boot, and to keep rain and slush from soaking through. A well-made vegan upper does that job exactly as well as a hide does.
Here's the detail that settles the argument. Look inside almost any insulated winter boot on the market, including the leather ones, and the insulation will be synthetic — fine microfibres engineered to trap air. The warmth in a leather winter boot is, in the great majority of cases, not coming from the leather. It's coming from a man-made lining that a vegan boot could use just as easily.
Insulation doesn't make heat. It traps air. And air doesn't care what the outside of your boot is made of.
The part most people forget: dry feet are warm feet
Where a boot is really won or lost in winter
If there's one thing that decides whether you're comfortable on a cold day, it isn't the thickness of the material. It's moisture. Water conducts heat far more efficiently than air does, so a damp foot loses warmth fast — which is why wet feet feel cold long before the air temperature justifies it.
And the irony is that over-insulating causes exactly that problem. A boot that's too warm and doesn't breathe makes your foot sweat; the sweat has nowhere to go; and half an hour later you have cold, clammy feet inside a very warm boot. Managing moisture matters at least as much as trapping heat, and it's the lining that does that work.
This is where materials have moved on considerably. Industry testing on footwear materials has found that some technical non-wovens transmit water vapour several times faster than leather does — meaning they let sweat out rather than holding it against the foot.
Inside our boots: a lining built to stay dry
NAE's boots are lined with onSteam®, a technical microfibre developed by a Spanish materials specialist in La Rioja, and it's engineered around precisely this problem. According to the manufacturer, the fabric is 100% breathable and can absorb up to eight times its own weight in water — but the point isn't the absorbing, it's what happens next: the material is designed to release that moisture again by evaporation, so it doesn't accumulate inside the boot.
The maker describes the result as a temperature-regulating effect — absorption and then complete drying, so the foot stays dry rather than sitting in its own sweat. What's more, the same microfibre is antibacterial and antimicrobial (which is why it doesn't develop the smell that damp footwear usually does), hypoallergenic, and highly resistant to abrasion, so it survives being rubbed by a foot several thousand times a day for years.
It's a good illustration of a wider point: the interior of a shoe is the part that most affects how it feels to wear, and it's the part that usually gets the least attention.

The outside: apple leather in winter
The uppers on our boots are made largely from apple leather — a material built from the skins, cores and fibre left over by the apple-juice industry, dried, milled and combined with a polyurethane binder over a fabric backing. Two properties count in winter. It's breathable, which supports the moisture story above rather than fighting it. And the coating gives it inherent water resistance — rain and slush bead on the surface instead of soaking straight in, which is exactly what you want walking to a bus stop in November. Apple leather is also naturally hypoallergenic and UV-resistant, so winter light and salt don't degrade it the way you might expect.
Two honest limits, because they matter. Water-resistant is not waterproof: none of these boots is designed for standing in a puddle for an hour, and neither is most leather. And unlike hide, apple leather won't develop a patina over the years — it holds its finish instead of ageing into one.
Where the criticism of synthetics comes from — and where it lands
It's worth being straight about this, because the reservation isn't invented. Research into footwear comfort has historically found that synthetic uppers could fall short of leather on thermal balance — the ability to keep the foot in a comfortable range rather than swinging hot and clammy. That finding is real, and anyone who has worn cheap plastic boots knows the feeling from the inside.
But the criticism is about undifferentiated, non-breathable synthetics — the sealed plastic upper with a nylon lining. It is not a verdict on materials engineered specifically for breathability and moisture transport. The gap between a cheap PU or PVC boot and a technical microfibre-lined one is enormous, and it's the whole reason a brand chooses the second.
The other honest caveat is scope. These are winter boots for a European winter: cold mornings, rain, slush, commuting, a long walk. They are not expedition boots. If you're standing still outdoors at fifteen below, you want a dedicated insulated boot with a rated fill — and that's true whether it's vegan or not.
Which boot, for which kind of cold
Coverage matters more than most people realise: the more of your leg a boot encloses, the less exposed skin there is to lose heat. If your winter is genuinely cold, a knee-high like BETIA or RUBY does more for you than any amount of extra material around the ankle would.

Four things that will keep your feet warmer than any material
- Leave room for air. A boot crammed tight with thick socks compresses the air layer that was keeping you warm, and restricts circulation on top of that. You should be able to wiggle your toes.
- One good sock, not two thin ones. Look for bamboo, Tencel or a technical synthetic: all of them move moisture away from the skin far better than cotton, which holds damp against it.
- Dry them properly. Never on a radiator or with a heater — direct heat damages soles, adhesives and finishes. Loosen them, pull the insole out if you can, and let them dry at room temperature.

So, are they as warm?
For the winter most of us actually live through: yes. A vegan boot with a breathable technical lining, a water-resistant upper and a decent sole will keep you as warm as its leather equivalent — because the things doing the work, the trapped air and the moisture management, were never made of leather to begin with.
